Summary

Dynamical systems that are commonly found as components of industrial systems have a behavior that needs to be represented through models to obtain information about its operation. The modeling requires the understanding of the physical principles governing each kind of system, together with criteria to select the most relevant features in each application, without forgetting the idealized nature of such representation. Computer simulation provides quantitative information according to particular operating conditions.

In this work conventional modeling techniques for mechanical, electrical and electromechanical systems are described with emphasis on the use and interpretation of transfer functions and linear models in the state space, highlighting the circumstances in which each approach is appropriate. Qualitative characteristics of the transient response are also explained, with special attention to the consequences of pole’s location. Finally, a way to carry out simulations using easily accessible open source software enabling graphic simulation is described. The text is useful as an aid in undergraduate courses of automatic control, dynamic systems and mechanical vibrations.

The author hopes that as a result of reading the text and performing selected exercises, any reader interested in the subject develops a concern that takes him/her to improve his/her knowledge and skills in this crucial and competitive area, which is in constant evolution.
