The social construction of culture markets: Between incentives to creation and access to culture

The social construction of culture markets. Between incentives to creation and access to culture

Editor: Jordi López-Sintas

Language: English

Binding: Perfect-bound Paperback

Pages: 203 pages

Dimensions (cm): 18.9 wide x 24.6 tall

Summary

The social media and the proliferation of mobile and home electronic devices have led to dramatic changes in how consumers access cultural expressions (whether via purchase or sharing) and the way firms select, (re)produce and market cultural expressions.

Technological innovation has driven changes that have profound implications for our society. The printing press converted manuscripts into tradeable goods and the gramophone did the same for musical performances. Both also introduced intermediaries into the market, namely, the publisher and the record label, who acquired sufficient power to influence governments and legislation regulating intellectual rights. In a similar way, the Internet and the digital technologies that ride on this highway have paved the way for yet another dramatic change. However, the balance of power has now shifted towards creators and consumers, who, as they socially construct the market for cultural expressions, are also reshaping legislative and economic aspects of the intellectual property regime.

This book addresses questions of access to cultural expressions, the historical evolution of authors’ rights, the current Spanish intellectual property regime and the social construction of music markets. It also proposes a contextual theory regarding access to music and a social interpretation of music access patterns. It concludes with a discussion of the issues raised in the previous chapters, focusing particularly on the core issues of access to culture, incentives to creativity and the selection, (re)production and marketing of cultural expressions.  The separation of the rights of creators and the rights of producers is suggested as a way to enhance incentives to creation while improving access to cultural expressions.

This book will be of particular interest to social science researchers seeking interdisciplinary insights into the social construction of markets from the economics, management, marketing, law and sociology perspectives.

Aims

Information and communication technologies have been providing an effective network infrastructure and development platform for logistics and service operations. To meet the needs of consumers and to promote core competences, many firms have been developing new types of services. LISS’2016 is a prime international forum for both researchers and practitioners to exchange the latest fundamental advances in the state of the art and practice of logistics, informatics and service sciences. Both researchers and practitioners will discuss academic issues, seize future development opportunities, master the developing trends and exchange the latest academic thoughts.

LISS 2011-2015 were successfully held in Beijing (China), Reading (UK), Berkeley (USA) and Barcelona (Spain) by Beijing Jiaotong University, in cooperation with University of Reading (UK), The Pennsylvania State University (USA), University of California, Berkeley (USA) and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya respectively. In total, about 1000 authors from 35 countries attended these conferences. The proceedings have been or will be indexed by CPCI-S (former ISTP) and EI Compendex since 2011. In 2015, the LISS was approved by IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) to be one of IEEE conference series. The conference proceeding will be included in IEEE Xplore Digital Library. The authors of excellent papers in the conference proceedings will be invited to publish their academic thoughts and methods in some international academic journals indexed by SSCI/SCI or EI with the highest priority.

LISS’2016 will be hosted by the International Center for Informatics Research of Beijing Jiaotong University, China Center for Industrial Security Research of Beijing Jiaotong University, School of Economics and Management of Beijing Jiaotong University, in cooperation with The University of Sydney Business School, the University of Sydney, Australia, University of Reading, UK and will be held during 24-27 July, 2016 in Sydney, Australia, with satellite sessions in Beijing Jiaotong University, China.
