Summary

Although knowledge management has been studied in depth from the 90s, especially, strategic management, innovation, trade, or business management, there are still many questions on how it is articulated and transferred, and about barriers to knowledge management, especially when it comes to internal tactical activities that could affect personnel working in “crafts”, such as maintenance and industrial installations or driving or operating facilities.

The aim of this research is the problem and the impact that involves introducing techniques for knowledge management in this area of significant importance to the company, analyzing the impact that proper capture, generation, transmission and utilization of knowledge may affect the strategic activities performed.

After a description of the status of the situation and the basic principles of knowledge management and engineering maintenance, it has been conducted a qualitative study in various companies within the areas of operations and maintenance, in order to understand the barriers and facilitators found by the staff involved for a proper transmission and use of fundamental knowledge, defining the strategic activities performed by the maintenance departments, and how they impact on the company.

Consequently, this paper aims to provide real references and judgments of experts to explain how and why knowledge and its management is so important in the maintenance division of the company. Those are the reasons that justify why managing knowledge in this area, is an intangible capital, but with a tangible value that directly affects the organization if it is sufficiently analyzed.
