This book assembles fundamental teaching materials for an introductory course to nonlinear optimization. These materials summarise author's experience in teaching this subject along twenty years. The main motivation for writing this work has not been teaching mathematics itself (therefore, no extensive mathematical deductions are included), but to introduce students to the fundamentals of mathematical optimization and algorithms holistically: basic concepts, skills development for the implementation of computer programs, and introduction to methodologies to problem solving that can be addressed with the methods of nonlinear optimization.

The work has a gradual development, from simple to complex, starting with the introduction of the basic concepts of optimization considering the classification of problems, the properties of functions of one and several variables, the necessary and sufficient conditions for unrestricted and quadratic optimization problems, and their geometric interpretation. The text includes examples and proposed problems for each subject.
